March 29: Festival of Smoke and Mirrors

TheĀ Festival of Smoke and Mirrors every March 29 remembers the old magician’s technique, as well as a favorite debating technique for a lot of people who might not win the argument otherwise.

Old magic shows (such as “Pepper’s Ghost” in 1800s London) used carefully placed mirrors to produce the illusions for the audience. Bursts of smoke at certain times would cover any sudden changes and distract the audience.

Today the phrase “smoke and mirrors” is used for any thing that distracts from the real issue (in other words, it’s the perfect description of just about every political statement! :) )

“Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”

1 Corinthians 13:12
