January 5: Twelfth Night

In many Christian traditions, Twelfth Night begins at sundown on January 5, before Twelfth Day, or Epiphany, on the 6th. Tradition calls for a large party to celebrate the last night of the Christmas season. Here’s a beautifully simple recipe for wassail, a traditional English drink for Twelfth Night.

Non-alcoholic Wassail:

For fun, have a few extra cinnamon sticks on hand to act as stirrers.

  • 1 gallon apple cider
  • 1 quart pineapple juice
  • 1 six ounce can frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 8 cinnamon sticks
  • 27 whole cloves

Mix all ingredients in large pot and simmer on low. Serve when hot.

For an even easier time, put them in a crockpot and leave on low until the party’s over.

Makes approximately 20 servings.
