January 7: Happy Distaff Day!

In other words, happy back to work day!¬†Okay, I know most of us have been back to work for several days, but now it’s official. Christmas is over.

On Distaff Day women in medieval Europe would return to their normal work of spinning, which uses a distaff.

Traditionally, all decorations are taken down yesterday, on Epiphany (oops! Guess we missed that in our house!). In some traditions, the days between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday (February 22, this year) is known as Ordinary Time, since there’s no large religious festival. I don’t know about you, but I feel a bit let down.

In C.S. Lewis’s fictional¬†Screwtape Letters, he writes that in some ways, a Christian is at his strongest when he continues doing what is right even though he doesn’t feel that it matters. Today, we can continue to do what is right, resting in the knowledge that our
