April 9*: Dyngus Day

Happy Dyngus Day! I had never heard of this until yesterday, and I couldn’t quite pass this up.

Dyngus Day is a Polish celebration of the end of Lent. After 40 days of fasting and seriousness, the tradition is for boys to throw water on girls and even hit them lightly on the legs with switches. Of course, the girls can get them back the next day by throwing dishes at them. Weird, huh?

“Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you
by the gazelles and by the does of the field:
Do not arouse or awaken love
until it so desires.”

  1. I have to admit, this day made me laugh. Apparently, Anderson Cooper had the same reaction (http://www.buzzfeed.com/lyapalater/anderson-cooper-has-a-giggle-fit).
