September 13: Defy Superstition Day

Go ahead. Pet a black cat. Open your umbrella inside. Pick up that penny, even though it’s totally tails up. And for goodness sake, go wash your lucky socks! September 13 is Defy Superstition Day, and it’s high time those socks were washed anyway.

Whatever silly superstitions you grew up with, today is a good day to defy them. After all, it is (Wednesday) the 13th.

However, I’ve got a bit of a paradox for you. Once you’ve trashed all your superstitions, it’s time to celebrate . . . Fortune Cookie Day! Yes, whoever created Fortune Cookie Day definitely didn’t get their act together with Defy Superstition Day.

If you are able to break open a fortune cookie today, I hope it gives you a real fortune. Our Chinese buffet seems to specialize in overused proverbs. However, one of the most recent “fortunes” I got was: “I’m sleeping. Come back later (Yes, fortune cookies need their rest too!)”

“Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like streams in the Negev.
Those who sow in tears
will reap with songs of joy.”

Psalm 126:4-5
