October 8*: Columbus Day

*In the USA, Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October.

In 1492
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

Happy Columbus Day! Now we all know that Christopher Columbus was not the first person to discover America, but he’s still a pretty important guy. After he sailed around with the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, European countries became interested in this New World, which drastically changed the world as we know it.

However I can’t imagine that they arrived in America looking as put together as so many of the old paintings depict.

To celebrate, you might be able to watch a local parade or learn more about Christopher Columbus (here’s an exhibit from the Library of Congress)and the history of the Americas (it’s more controversial than you might think!). And if you happen to find yourself near Corpus Christi, stop and visit the replica ships there at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. I haven’t been there in years, but, if memory serves, it was quite fun.

“Like cold water to a weary soul
is good news from a distant land.”
