November 23*: You’re Welcome Day

Every year on the fourth Thursday in November, Americans stop to say “thank you!” Then, one year, some unknown smart aleck responded with the obvious, and the day after Thanksgiving became You’re Welcome Day.

Now, personally, I’ve always treated Thanksgiving largely as a day to give thanks to God. However, it’s always nice to thank those people around you for everything they do (although you jolly well better be more specific than that if you want to sound the least bit sincere!). Then, everyone knows that “you’re welcome” is the proper response.

Nevertheless, I’m having a bit of difficulty picturing how this is going to work. Suppose Bob tells you thanks on Thanksgiving. Considering the day and this holiday, you might reply with a corny “No, thank you!” Then, to celebrate You’re Welcome Day, you show up on Friday and, out of the blue, tell Bob “oh, by the way, you’re welcome?” I’m just not seeing this!

Anybody have a better idea for me?

“Give thanks to the┬áLord,┬ácall on his name;
make known among the nations what he has done.”

Psalm 105:1
