November 25: National Parfait Day

Now that we’ve eaten all those delicious but heavy foods of Thanksgiving, November 25 is time for a lighter, but still sweet taste: it’s National Parfait Day!

Until today, I thought a parfait was always made by layering fruit and yogurt together and topping it with more fruit or possibly granola.  Apparently that is only one version, and definitely not the original parfait.

If you’re interested, the first parfaits were a French dessert given the simple name “perfect,” or, in French, “parfait.” French parfaits are made with sugar, eggs, cream, and some sort of flavoring, like this coffee flavored one.

On the other hand, an American parfait is always made in layers, which show up beautifully in a clear glass. All sorts of things can go into an American parfait: ice cream, yogurt, whipped cream, chocolate, nuts, fruits . . . . really, whatever you have on hand that seems to go together well.

Either way, November 25 is still National Parfait Day, so get yourself a parfait. I’m sure it will be “perfect!” 🙂

“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Matthew 5:48
