December 7: Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

USS_SHAW_exploding_Pearl_Harbor_Nara_80-G-16871On the morning of December 7, 1941, over 300 Japanese planes bombed the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  2,402 American soldiers died in the battle, with another 1,282 wounded. Many ships were sunk or damaged and 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed.

FDR_signing_declaration_of_war_against_JapanJapan hoped the surprise attack would cripple the U.S. forces and prevent America from joining the war. Instead, the US declared war the next day.

December 7 is the “day that will live in infamy.”

“Help us, O God our Savior,
    for the glory of your name;
deliver us and forgive our sins
    for your name’s sake.”

Psalm 79:9
