January 5: National Bird Day

sparrowToday’s holiday is for the birds – quite literally! January 5 is National Bird Day!

Okay, was that too much of a groaner? Sorry, but it was too easy a setup. Anyway, National Bird Day was begun by bird activists to call attention to the life of birds in captivity and to species which are at risk of extinction. It’s also a great day to just enjoy all our feathered friends.

robin-in-winterSadly, it’s snowing here and most of our birds have gone south for the winter, so it doesn’t look like a very good National Bird Day from my window. However, if we miss this one, we’ll have another chance on May 4 when another Bird Day is held.

“I know every bird in the mountains,
and the creatures of the field are mine.”
Psalm 50:11
