*World Marriage Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in February, so the date changes every year.
World Marriage Day was started in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1981. The day was created to honor marriages and recognize the “beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice, and joy in daily married life” (World Marriage Day Purpose Statement). Now the celebration is sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter and has spread across the globe, especially among Catholics.
Today is a great day for husbands and wives to celebrate their marriages, but it’s also a time for everyone to honor the couples who have shown us what marriage should be.
The theme for World Marriage Day is from John 15, verse 12:
“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”
