March 7: Cereal Day

cerealHappy Cereal Day, everybody! A few sources say that the first cereal (corn flakes) was served on March 7, but I can’t verify that. Anyway, here’s the story of the first cereal:

Dr. John Harvey Kellogg 1910sDr. John Harvey Kellogg and his brother Will Keith Kellogg, both strict Seventh Day Adventists, were running the world’s first “sanitarium.” The doctor was working to create healthy food, when he accidentally overcooked some wheat, processed it, and created the first cereal flakes. His brother took over most of the marketing, and created quite a rift with his health conscious brother when he added sugar to the recipe.

Tony the Tiger 1955The Kellogg brothers had two more innovations later on: granola and cereal box prizes!

“He grants peace to your borders
and satisfies you with the finest of wheat.”

Psalm 147:14
