July 4: Independence Day

US Flag

In the U.S., Independence Day is often referred to simply as July 4th. In 1776, thirteen American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain, a much more powerful, far better trained, well established world power. Their sheer audacity is probably worthy of a holiday in and of itself, but, the funny thing is, it worked! It was a close thing for a while, but seven years later England signed the Treaty of Paris and recognized the United States of America as a sovereign nation in its own right.

USA Declaration of Independence

“But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name┬ámay rejoice in you.”

Psalm 5:11
