July 10: Tesla Day

Nikola Tesla, circa 1896Nikola Tesla, scientist, inventor, engineer, and favorite actual historical character of sci-fi lovers everywhere, was born on July 10, 1856, in what is now known as Croatia. In his late twenties, he immigrated to the U.S., becoming a U.S. citizen in 1891.

His experiments and inventions covered a range of topics, from radios to x-rays, AC power, and even an attempted global wireless communications. In fact, I actually just watched a Mythbusters episode where they try to recreate Tesla’s supposed earthquake machine. In his own lifetime, Tesla became extremely famous as a mad scientist, known for his off the wall announcements, spectacular experiments, and many great inventions.

“So I turned my mind to understand,
to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
    and the madness of folly.”

Ecclesiastes 7:25

P.S. July 10 is also Teddy Bear Picnic Day!
