Nikola Tesla, scientist, inventor, engineer, and favorite actual historical character of sci-fi lovers everywhere, was born on July 10, 1856, in what is now known as Croatia. In his late twenties, he immigrated to the U.S., becoming a U.S. citizen in 1891.
His experiments and inventions covered a range of topics, from radios to x-rays, AC power, and even an attempted global wireless communications. In fact, I actually just watched a Mythbusters episode where they try to recreate Tesla’s supposed earthquake machine. In his own lifetime, Tesla became extremely famous as a mad scientist, known for his off the wall announcements, spectacular experiments, and many great inventions.
“So I turned my mind to understand,
to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness
and the madness of folly.”
P.S. July 10 is also Teddy Bear Picnic Day!
