July 13: Barbershop Music Appreciation Day

July 13 is Barbershop Music Appreciation Day. Although barbershop music is usually associated with those nicely matched groups of four men in bright suits, today’s holiday is really more about the women’s groups.

Their husbands were all involved in men only barbershop quartets, and these ladies wanted to be involved as well. That meeting led to the first Sweet Adeline chorus, an organization that now involves some 24,000 singers.

You can celebrate Barbershop Music Appreciation Day by listening to some good barbershop music or singing some yourself. Sounds fun!

P.S. Don’t get today’s holiday mixed up with Barbershop Quartet Day on April 11.
