August 25: Founder’s Day (U.S. National Park Service)

Happy Founder’s Day! Although there are many different Founder’s Day celebrations on the calendar, on August 25 we celebrate the founders of the U.S. National Park Service. In the early 1900s there was much debate on what to do with a good bit of federal land. Then, on this day in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed a law creating an agency “to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.”

If you didn’t know it already, our national parks are pretty amazing. 🙂 Just take a look at the river all the way at the bottom of the Grand Canyon or watch Old Faithful erupt in Yellowstone. To celebrate Founder’s Day, visit a national park. Many of them hold special events for the day. Search for a nearby National Park here.

“Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let your glory be over all the earth.”
