October 9: National Chess Day

In 1976, President Gerald Ford proclaimed October 9 as National Chess Day, to recognize “a game that generates challenge, intellectual stimulation and enjoyment for citizens of all ages, [. . .] that sharpens the mind, tests human faculties and encourages healthy competition.

chessSo, on October 9, whether you’re a card carrying chess club member, you haven’t played for ages, or you’ve never even tried it, dust off your chess board. It’s fun, and, as President Ford said, it’s good for your brain! 🙂

Before you go about your day though, it turns out that October 9 goes by a lot of other names:

  • Leif Erikson Day
You can read about it in last year’s blog here.
  • National Moldy Cheese Day
I love cheese, but, honestly, don’t remind me! Ick! Find more here from food.com.
  • International Top Spinning Day
Check out the Spinning Top and Yo-Yo Museum here. It looks like a fun place!
  • Emergency Nurses Day (2nd Wednesday in October)
They see you at your worst, and, quite frankly, I hope never to see one (at work) again! Nevertheless, I’m so glad they’re there, taking care of us in our panic.

  • Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day
or Bring Your Teddy Bear to School Day. It’s pretty self-explanatory, but oh-so-nice.

In other words, pick your holiday, and have fun!
