October 27*: Mother-in-Law Day

We’ve all heard the horror stories of mothers-in-law who have sabotaged their children’s marriages. Yet I’m convinced that these events are actually rather rare. Either way, our mothers-in-law deserve our love and respect. After all, they did raise our spouses, right?

Ruth and Naomi, by Pieter Lastman, 1624

Happy Mother-in-Law Day!

The recently widowed and poverty stricken Ruth, to her own, also recently widowed and poverty stricken, mother-in-law Naomi:

“Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.”

Ruth 1:16-17
