February 16: Almond Day

almonds http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/February 16 is Almond Day! Almonds pack a lot of nutrients for such a small size. An ounce (about 23 kernels) is just over 160 calories, about 6 grams of carbohydrates and about 6 grams of protein (find out more nutrition info than you’d ever want to know about it here).

almond-blossom http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/In honor of Almond Day, here’s several more totally random collection of almond facts:

  • Many historians believe the almond tree was one of the first plants to be domesticated.
  • Most wild almonds are poisonous!
  • Almond flour is popular for gluten-free cooking.
  • The Israelites shaped the golden lampstand for the temple like an almond branch with flowers (see Exodus 25 and 37).
  • The word amygdaloid is used for any object that is shaped “like an almond.”

By the way, if almonds aren’t really your thing, check out another February 16 holiday: Do a Grouch a Favor Day in last year’s post here. Maybe we should bring almonds to all the grouches in our lives, and kill two birds with one stone!

“The next day Moses entered the Tent of the Testimony and saw that Aaron’s staff, which represented the house of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.”

February 16: Do a Grouch a Favor Day

February 16 is  Do a Grouch a Favor Day. Although I can’t find out who created this day, it seems like a pretty good idea to me. With luck, it might even make the grouch smile for a moment – just don’t hold your breath!

Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe

Philippians 2:14 & 15
